This is a beautiful old property with great bones, high ceilings, beautiful staircase, reasonably well appointed updated kitchen and comfortable sitting room. The location would be ideal for some, but for a family it was less than ideal as it is located in an area with homes rented by college age men and women who were there to party. This meant that the group of men (about 8-10 of them) staying across the street were up at all hours being pretty loud. The home is about two blocks off of King Street which was convenient for restaurants and shopping. But, there were some problems. This property has been neglected which meant that the air conditioner for the ground floor went out while we were there. The hosts were responsive, but this meant that at 11:30 at night a portable AC unit was delivered to make it bearable. Fortunately the upstairs AC was fine, allowing us to sleep comfortably. However, upstairs there was a stench that emanated from the bathroom and permeated the entire floor. I would guess this reflected a plumbing leak in the bathroom which threatens to ruin the beautiful original hardwood floors. Our luggage was also permeated with the smell, leading to a hefty dry cleaning bill upon our return home. There were also many small things like a dishwasher rack that always fell off the tracks, very loose faucet in the downstairs bathroom, toilet paper role holder upstairs that kept coming off, etc. There were also hosting deficits such as insufficient toiletries, no hand soap or hand towel in the half bath downstairs, no laundry detergent, etc. There was one very sad, old, used sponge in the kitchen, no dish cloths and only one dish towel. If we had paid less, this would not be an issue but at over $700/night, this was unacceptable. The hosts were responsive partly (delivering toiletries but no hand soap or towel), but we felt like the issues we had to raise wouldn’t have been necessary if the hosts had put effort into maintaining the property and had put some effort into accommodating needs of guests. At this price I would also think that a few beach towels or a beach bag would be appropriate given that most guests in Charleston will visit the beach at some point. We were appreciative that the hosts compensated us for the AC issue, refunding one night’s stayminus fees, but I would rather have had a problem free stay. Having to take a trip to Walmart to purchase basics such as kitchen towels, kitchen cloths/sponges, hand soap, etc, should not have been our responsibility. It was also fairly buggy. I wouldn’t normally mention this because it would be expected in South Carolina in an older home, but one family member received a bite that developed into a cellulitis that had to be treated with antibiotics. There were no personal touches, no host book with recommendations for restaurants, etc, which is always standard, and no apparent effort to welcome us and make us comfortable.

Great location, home and host!

May 2022

We had a great stay at this house. Everything was exactly as advertised here. Big space, nice, clean beds, and a great location. Shower was the only tough spot for five of us trying to get ready in the morning but it’s really no big deal. Would stay here again in a heart beat

Pro and Con: The home is located in a bustling area not far from King Street, which can be great but very touristy. The home itself is very charming and well furnished. Stay Duvet who manages the property was very easy to deal with. 5 stars.
