Upper King: The house is located in the heart of the charming and trendy Upper King district of downtown Charleston. With its friendly neighbors, cozy restaurants, and tree-lined streets, our neighborhood will immerse you in Charleston’s classic charm. This house is perfect for a family or group seeking a fun, culinary, and cultural vacation. Popular dining spots in the neighborhood include Leons, Little Jacks, Melfi's, Maison, Rodney Scotts, Berkeleys, The Ordinary, The Grocery, Xiao Bao Biscuit, Bistronomy, Chubby Fish, Pink Cactus, and the Graft (Wine) or Vintage (Cocktails) for drinks. We recommend going to The Daily for a cup of locally-roasted coffee and their delicious cookies and cakes. The house is only a short walk from the very popular King Street where you will find a multitude of great shops – including antique shops and fashion boutiques – as well as an endless list of buzzing restaurants and Charleston's best nightlight scene. Publix is conveniently located nearby on Lockwood Drive as well. The neighborhood is also within walking distance to CofC, MUSC, Roper, and the Citadel.

Great area, right on the outskirts of downtown. Very clean and very nicely decorated. A perfect trip!
Wonderful home. Clean, pretty, and has everything you’ll need. If you’re renting a car it’s a 10/10!
We stayed at the Engle for 4 nights in late August (3 guests). Overall we had a nice stay with some comments: Pros: 1) Entire house was very clean and well decorated. The kitchen was particularly great with a gas stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, large fridge, and large sink. 2) Showers had more than enough hot water for 3 people showering around the same time. 3) Host was responsive and check in and check out process was very simple and hassle-free. (We were not asked to run laundry, wash dishes, turn out sheets/bedding, etc. Only request was to take out the trash.) Host also accommodated our request for slightly earlier check in. Cons: 1) LOCATION: It's somewhat to be expected as the downtown area has lots of stores and not many houses/space to put Airbnbs, but this property is pretty far from the downtown area if you don't have a car. Took 15 minutes each way to walk to the visitor center/Charleston Museum, about 30 min each way to walk to the historic market, and about 45 min each way to walk to the Old Exchange (probably even longer to get to other locations along the battery). Considering that we were already walking a lot between different attractions, the extra 30 minutes to get back to the house in the Aug heat/humidity were quite inconvenient, especially when we were hauling groceries. Also, the neighboring property appears to be an Airbnb as well and feels generally safe, but after leaving the property parking lot it's basically a highway overpass and some abandoned lots for a while before reaching the main street/shopping area. We personally didn't feel that safe walking there after dark so we opted to call Ubers instead at night. 2) The house itself is a bit small (there is nothing besides the bedrooms/bathrooms, small living area, and kitchen as seen in the photos); it worked okay for 3 people, but might be a bit cramped for 4. 3) Some comments about the house as of the time of writing this review (it's possible that the owner may address these issues in the future): (a) It seems that there is no cold water in the house. The "cold" faucets seem to produce lukewarm water so we were only able to choose between lukewarm and hot water. (Strangely, which direction on the faucet was "hot" and which was "lukewarm" also seemed to switch at times?? We thought we were imagining it at first, but it happened on the kitchen sink several times and left us very confused at how to get colder water). Probably not an issue in the winter, but we definitely needed the cold water in August. (b) The thermostat is a bit unresponsive. We had it constantly set to 70 degrees, but it always hovered somewhere around 73-76 degrees. (c) This might not be an issue for some people, but the front door has a large transparent glass pane so that someone outside can easily see into the living area/kitchen. We tried to keep our valuables inside the bedrooms (away from view of the front door). ***Not a comment about the property but may be useful to other guests: For some reason Uber maps does not seem to recognize how to get to this house efficiently from downtown; it plots an extremely roundabout route that goes too far north of the house, then takes a highway to come back down south. We had some drivers that used other navigation programs and did not use the roundabout route, but others did do the inefficient highway circle route. This may affect your Uber fare and/or the time it takes drivers to arrive.
This cozy cottage is was in a great location, making it easy to walk to downtown Charleston or hop onto the highway for an excursion into the surrounding areas. There is a bit of road noise from Hwy 17, but otherwise, this rental suited all of our needs.
