The Space

When you first arrive you will be greeted by local artist Carly Thomas’ wall mural. From here you will enter through the driveway side door, make your way up the steps and enter Apartment D. Southern Shangri-La on Coming St might be located in Charleston, but feels like a paradise a world away. From the jungly wall mural to the Balinese furniture, it'll be your own little getaway in the heart of downtown Charleston. Southern Shangri-La design is inspired by personal travels, love for plants, the beach and support for local artists. Apartment D is a top floor apartment which offers an abundance of natural light and a cozy 700 sqft footprint, perfect for a 4 person group. This 2 bedroom 1 bath is situated on Coming Street near great restaurants, coffee shops/bakeries and the night scene. Our location is ideal if you plan to park your car for the weekend and hit the city on foot (or bike)! This is 1 of 4 apartments in the building. We airbnb all of them so you might see other guests in passing so be friendly and say hello. We live a block away and are always tending to the plants, playing with the decor, or walking our dogs around the block so you might see us bopping around as well. Guests will have exclusive access to the entire unit D on the second floor of the shared building. Easily accessible and well lit for your safety. You can pull one car off the street and into a driveway/parking lot, which makes packing and unpacking a breeze.

During your stay, this shouldn’t be too bothersome, since the city’s noise ordinance dictates quiet hours between 10pm & 8am. 10+ Day Stays are subject to an additional cleaning fee at host's discretion Alteration Policy: Any change of dates or cancellation of any nights of the original reservation will not be approved within 60 days or arrival. Please use painters tape if you plan on using tape to decorate for an event. If the wall is damaged due to tape removal or decorations, you will have to pay $500 for repainting. We arrived on New Year’s Eve from Minneapolis for our first visit to Charleston. We realized our dinner reservation at Chez Nous was literally across the street! Our brunch reservation for the next day at The Darling Oyster Bar was about a 3-4 block walk! So easy to get to all of these great restaurants! The apartment is decorated really cute. The bed was comfortable! We used the second bedroom as a closet/dressing room. We made dinner there one night and found olive oil and salt and pepper on hand. We could hear the people below us and I’m sure they could hear us but both were respectful of being quieter after dark so it wasn’t an issue. There was a Bluetooth speaker for us to use and the smart tv was great for evenings in. We used the washer/dryer so that we had clean clothes to unpack at home. We walked to Leon’s and all the way to Edmund’s Oust - got our steps in! Perfect location in a safe neighborhood! Everything was very clean and well taken care of. Would love to come back!

Unfortunately I didn’t get to stay here as I tested positive for Covid the day before. My travel companion did stay and said it was a great location and everyone very accommodating (fixed the fraying rug so she wouldn’t trip) and quick to respond. She also said it was well equipped all around and comfortable. I’m knocking off a star because when I found out the day before I was supposed to fly out that I had Covid, I couldn’t get a straight answer on any Covid policy. If a refund or credit had been offered, my friend could’ve gotten a hotel room for cheaper and I wouldn’t have been out $900. She didn’t need a 2 bedroom for herself. I finally heard back from air bnb days later and was told they would ask the host if they could offer me any sort of refund, credit, or compensation, and they said no. This was disappointing, especially over the holiday season (my trip was between Christmas and New Year’s). Probably won’t stay with them again because of this.

We checked in to find that there was no water: the faucets didn't work anywhere in the property. There had been some unusually cold weather and apparently the pipes had frozen. Nobody can predict or control the weather or know if their pipes will freeze. BUT, knowing that the listing had no water, would you really let a guest check in? And then find this out for themselves, and then offer them a 20% discount off the first night? We left and found somewhere else to stay and worked with AirBnB to get a refund, because the host was extremely slow to respond and indicate their plan. What would have earned a good rating would have been proactive communication - before we checked in - that there was a problem, and an offer of either another accommodation or a refund, right away. Like what a hotel would do if the room they put you in had no water.
